Nala Studio Architects Featured in Habitat Magazine: A Timeless 1920s Bungalow Renovation

Renovating a character bungalow is always about finding the right balance between preserving its architectural heritage and creating a home that meets the needs of modern family life.
For this project, our clients wanted to retain the charm and character of their 1920s bungalow while introducing generous, light-filled spaces that would better suit their lifestyle.

The result is a carefully considered renovation featuring expansive open-plan living, a cosy media room, a bespoke kitchen with adjoining scullery and seamless connections to the landscaped outdoor areas and swimming pool.

Located within a Special Character Area, the renovation required particular sensitivity to the home's original architectural features and street-facing appearance. One of our favourite design details is the cleverly concealed ensuite, thoughtfully integrated into the existing façade without compromising the bungalow's heritage character.

A Timeless and Considered Interior

As highlighted in Habitat, a restrained palette of warm neutrals helps create a cohesive connection between the home's original architecture and its contemporary additions.

Soft whites, natural timber and carefully selected finishes provide a timeless backdrop, allowing architectural detailing, artwork and furnishings to shine.

Thoughtful lighting further enhances the original features, including the decorative ceiling roses and generous ceiling heights, while bringing a contemporary warmth to the renovated spaces.

The result is a home that feels both sophisticated and welcoming, with a sense of continuity between old and new.
